A little help with making a memorable application

Be prepared

Be prepared

Details matter. It may seem like a small thing but getting your email address and phone number right on your application is vital. It’s amazing how many people get it wrong, make sure you double check everything!

Our application form

Our application form

Be relevant. You’d be amazed how many people attach CV’s stating they are excited about working for a totally different company or job.

Tailor your CV. Think about what we need to know about your ability to do the job it’s not just about your experience we’re interested in how you manage situations too. We love people who can show us what they’ve done and how it’s made a difference.

Be passionate. We want to hear from people who really want to work for Toolstation. We’re really passionate about our business and we want you to be too. Taking the time and effort on your application really makes the difference and makes it clear to us you really want to work with us.

Getting ready for interviews

Getting ready for interviews

Whether you’re going to be interviewed over the phone or face-to-face, it’s always a good idea to prepare in advance. Take a look at the job description and think about the kind of things we might want to know in the interview. For example, what skills will you need? Think of real-life examples when you’ve shown these before – either at work, or in your everyday life.

We’ll also want to know why you’re interested in working at Toolstation. Our business is made up of thousands of individuals, with one thing in common - a passion for Toolstation! It's important to us that everyone joining the business is equally as passionate. Think about how you’d answer this - whether it’s just because you enjoy doing DIY, or that the role’s a chance to gain more responsibility. And we’ll ask what you know about the business. So, take a look at our website and find out a bit more about us before your interview.

In your interview

In your interview

Don’t worry if you’re the kind of person who gets nervous about interviews. We’ll always try to make you feel relaxed before the interview starts, but there are a few ways you can try to settle your nerves. It’s not a test - it’s more of a chance for us both to get to know each other, so we just want you to be yourself.

Phone interview. It’s always a good idea to find somewhere quiet where there aren’t any distractions. This will help you to concentrate on your answers.

Face-to-face interview. Always try to get there in plenty of time, so you don’t arrive in a rush. And if you’re running late, call and let us know. Printing out the details of where to go is always a good idea too, just in case you can’t get them on your phone. When you’re in the interview, look the interviewer in the eye when you answer and try to breathe normally, as this helps you to relax.
