Toolstation’s head office function is small by comparison to other similar sized businesses, it has grown largely organically over the years but now boasts a wealth of experience in all functions.

Opportunities have been created and whist specialist skills have been recruited where required a high percentage of colleagues have transferred into head office from other areas of the business or developed their skills within their specialist areas.

As a result Toolstation is not your typical head office function, there is very little bureaucracy, decisions can be made quickly which creates a highly cohesive unit. We aren’t a formal business and the culture certainly isn’t suits and ties! The fact head office is such a tight team means there is a family feel with committed, responsive individuals that are highly efficient.

“Head Office” includes marketing, buying, I.T., finance, human resources and central support but it doesn’t stop there, our audit team ensure compliance across the business and our field based senior retail management team drive the operational performance of our branches.

  1. In your current role what makes you feel most valued?

    The varying level of responsibility bestowed upon me and the freedom granted in allowing me to use my own initiative on a daily basis.

  2. How would you describe a typical day at work?

    In truth there isn’t a typical day, it really does vary. I face the standard daily challenges of any business, the way in which they are tackled however is not set in stone. My day might start with responding to a few email queries sent from one of over 130 stores, designing an internal racking layout for the latest pipeline site, meeting with the Commercial Resource Director for a one to one development session, or liaising with our various transport carriers to continuously seek the most cost effective way in which to deliver products to our customers.

  3. What is the best thing about working for Toolstation?

    The opportunities that exist from having your work acknowledged, development and reward based on what you contribute to the business as opposed to your length of service. There is no risk in becoming lost within a corporate maze and seen only as a number.

  4. What advice would you give to any potential candidates?

    Candidates need to be fast learning, enthusiastic loyal and above all adaptable to a changing environment.

Charlie joined us in 2006 as a Retail Assistant Manager and has since progressed through management in varied roles to internal audit. Charlie is now heading up our audit and compliance team that support our national network of sales counters, distribution centres and support office functions.

  1. What attracted you to Toolstation as a company?

    I had been recently made redundant and I wanted to join a young and rapidly expanding company with the potential for career opportunities.

  2. What is the best experience you have had since joining Toolstation?

    The best experience I have had is the journey in my own personal development as I have had the opportunity to do multiple roles and learn new skills with the company.

  3. How would you describe a typical day at work?

    The great part about my role is that no two days are the same. I could be auditing one day, coaching the next day or doing an investigation. The only consistency is that my days are usually fast paced and sometimes challenging.

  5. What advice would you give to any potential candidates?

    It is a great company to work for and if you are willing to put the time and effort in there are plenty of opportunities to develop a successful career.

  1. What attracted you to Toolstation?

    It was clear to me from early on that the ambition of the company was a huge factor in the growth rate it was enjoying. With that ambition comes lots of opportunities to drive sales and try new things and this attracted me greatly.

  2. What is the best experience you have had since joining Toolstation?

    Attending the annual Retail Conference and feeling the buzz of working for an ambitious and successful business like Toolstation. Geoff Cooper, CEO of the TP Group spoke at the conference and it is clear that as part of this group there are many more years of profitable growth to come. Meeting all the branch Managers at the conference you can see the enthusiasm and dedication that has helped us to be so successful.

  3. How would you describe the culture?

    Very much a “can do” culture with everyone pulling together to get things done, and everyone does this in a way that keeps things simple and straightforward.

  4. What is the best things about working for Toolstation?

    Working with similar minded people all working towards the same goal of growing sales and ensuring we can provide our great service to more and more customers across the UK!
